What is VoIP?
Put simply, VoIP (aka. IP Telephony) is the transmission of voice through the internet or other network systems. Voice-over-IP systems carry telephony signals as digital audio, reduced using speech data compression techniques and encapsulated in a data-packed stream to travel through the internet or other network. It isn't new technology, with voice being transmitted across the early internet in 1973. However, the latest techniques ensure that the sound quality is extremely high, and that the reliability is often even greater than that of traditional phone lines.
Who should use it?
VoIP facilitates tasks which are too difficult or expensive to implement with traditional phone systems, meaning that it provides greater efficiency of service for a range of industries. For companies with more than one branch, VoIP is ideal - allowing for free inter-branch calls on high quality, secure lines. VoIP also allows transmission of more than one telephone call across a single broadband connection, making VoIP a simple way of adding an extra telephone line to your office.
What are the Benefits?
VoIP allows for: video conversation, conference calling, call forwarding, automatic redial, and caller ID all at no or little extra cost. You can send messages and data in parallel with phone conversations using simple computer interfaces. Secure calls can also be made easily using VoIP.
All of the converged voice and data services are delivered over the CherryFive MPLS network, which was designed to carry both voice and data traffic. CherryFive Voice customers can choose the individual components of the service they require, and change or add further components as their needs change.
